Bushwalk of the month
- Furber Steps-Scenic Railway: 2 km, 45 minutes, medium difficulty
You'll get a great cross-section of the Blue Mountains scenery on this walk, which includes a self-guided walk down the Furber Steps. Cut into the sandstone by hand, these steps climb up through the rainforest under spectacular rock overhangs and past plunging waterfalls.
Start from the Katoomba Falls Kiosk parking area. Descend the steps to the to Witches Leap. Turn left and head down to the Rainforest Lookout – you'll get fine views of the rainforest canopy here, and might also hear whipbirds and lyrebirds. You can also take a 10-minute detour along the Underfalls Track, for a superb view of Katoomba Falls. Then return to the main track and continue on to Queen Victoria Lookout. Descend the Furber Steps, turn right at the bottom and walk 200 m through the rainforest. You'll pass spectacular rock overhangs and plunging waterfalls (such as Veras Grotto, a short diversion from the main track) before reaching the base of the Scenic Railway. If you'd rather only have downhill memories of Furber Steps, the railway runs every day from 9 am to 4.50 pm.
